China has slammed NATO as "a walking war machine that causes chaos wherever it goes”. Beijing’s criticism came as the western security alliance kickstarted its largest military exercise since the Cold War on January 24. The Steadfast Defender 2024 exercise that started on January 24 will run through May. A top commander said the drills would rehearse NATO’s execution of its first defence plans in decades, involving a “simulated emerging conflict scenario with a near-peer adversary”. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko has said the NATO exercises mark an "irrevocable return" of the alliance to Cold War schemes. Russian media has also questioned whether "the drills could become a cover for the delivery of new strategic assistance to Ukraine.
