After thwarting Russia's attempt to seize its capital, Ukraine continued to surprise the world in 2022, liberating vast territories from Russian invaders. Successful offensives in the north and south eased the threat to Kharkiv and reclaimed Kherson in November. Despite Russia's struggle for the city of Bakhmut, Ukraine's highly anticipated 2023 offensive aimed to cut the Russian land bridge to Crimea.
Unfortunately, progress was slow due to Russian obstacles, turning the campaign into a modest success. Russia adapted to Ukraine's tactics, creating a war of attrition. Despite Western support, including tanks and cluster bombs, the war's status remained unchanged.
Can Ukraine achieve a breakthrough before the season ends? It might. But why, up until recently, has the 2022 campaign been less than stellar so far, and how might Ukraine be able to turn the situation around?
In todayβs video we take a look at where the Ukrainians were at the start of the offensive, where they are now, and the dangers that still await them.
